Grief Therapy
At Bethlehem Counseling Associates (BCA), our licensed grief therapists provide compassionate, personalized grief counseling for adults, adolescents, couples & family to help you process and make sense of the wide range of emotions that accompany any kind of significant loss. You’ll learn to work through complex emotions—guilt, anger, emptiness, questioning of self—and to begin adjusting toward a new way of being, finding meaning and healing in your own time.
Grief and Loss Counseling Services
BCA’s therapy for bereavement provides a compassionate space to process the pain of losing someone you love and begin to adjust to life without them. Through support and guidance, you can explore your emotions, find ways to honor your loved one’s memory, and gradually move toward healing and renewed meaning.
Stages of Grief
Grief is a deeply personal journey that unfolds in its own time and way and looks different for everybody. However, the stages of grief represent common emotional responses people experience after a significant loss. Understanding these stages can help bring clarity and self-compassion to the process. While not everyone moves through the stages in a straight line, recognizing them can help you make sense of your feelings and begin healing. In grief therapy, we explore each stage together, creating space for your emotions and guiding you toward peace and acceptance at your own pace.
Bereavement Support for Death of a Loved One
After the death of a loved one, people often experience a wide range of emotions beyond sadness. It’s also natural to feel disoriented and overwhelmed after someone deeply important to you has passed away. At BCA, our bereavement therapists provide tools to help you cope with the pain, honor your loved one’s memory, and begin finding hope, and balance in life again.
Grief Support for a Significant Loss
Grief touches every part of life, and it can arise from any kind of significant loss or life transition from something that was meaningful. Whether you have experienced the end of a relationship, loss of health, career, a dream, the “empty nest,” or a lost sense of stability, our grief counselors offer tools to help you find a path forward, honor your feelings, and begin to heal.
Divorce and Separation Mental Health Support
Grief therapy can be deeply supportive for those coping with the end of a marriage or long-term relationship. Even if you were the one who initiated the separation, it’s normal to grieve the loss of the life you once shared, the future you imagined, and the sense of connection that once existed. Therapy provides a compassionate space to process those emotions, rebuild your sense of self, and begin moving forward with clarity and self-acceptance.
Miscarriage, Infertility, Involuntary Childlessness
Miscarriages and infertility can cause deep sorrow—not just for a baby you hoped for, but for the future you imagined, your changing identity, and the body you trusted. Loss therapy can provide meaningful support to help you find a space to name and validate these losses, even if they’re not always recognized by others (sometimes called “disenfranchised grief”).
Anticipatory Grief
Anticipatory grief is the grief you feel before an expected loss — such as when a loved one is terminally ill, or when you sense a major life change approaching. Therapy can help you safely express complex emotions that may feel conflicting, like sadness mixed with hope or love alongside resentment. Our grief therapists can help you explore and process these feelings, resulting in a sense of peace, grounding, and emotional resilience both before and after the loss occurs.

FAQs for Grief Therapy
What type of feelings can accompany grief and loss and are my feelings normal?
There is no single or “right way” to grieve a loss, so consider all feelings normal. Some of the most common feelings include shock, disbelief, anger, guilt, anxiety, loneliness, relief, numbness, and confusion. Many also describe a sense of emptiness, yearning, or helplessness, while others may feel peace or gratitude as they reflect on their loved one’s life. These emotions can come and go in waves.
My loss was so long ago but I am still unable to let go and move on. Is this normal?
Yes, it’s completely normal. Grief doesn’t follow a timeline, or have an expiration date. Some losses stay with us in powerful ways for many years. The goal of therapy is not to “move on” or forget, but to learn to live with the loss in a healthy and compassionate way. Grief counseling offers tools to gently revisit that loss and explore what’s keeping the pain so present. Over time, you can find new ways to carry your memories, honor your loved one, and allow joy and meaning to return to your life alongside the grief.
Can grief therapy be helpful even if I’m not ready to talk about my loss?
Yes. Many people start therapy before they’re ready to share details about their loss. Healing doesn’t begin with talking, it begins with safety. Grief therapy creates a compassionate space where silence, tears, or uncertainty are all welcome. A grief therapist can help you gently explore your feelings at your own pace, offering tools for grounding, self-care, and emotional regulation until you’re ready to open up more. Our intake team can help determine if therapy is right for you.
Can grief counseling support my whole family after a shared loss?
Yes. Grief counseling can support your entire family as you navigate a shared loss together. A family therapist can help each family member express their emotions in healthy ways, improve communication, and understand that everyone grieves differently. Family grief counseling also creates a safe space to honor your loved one’s memory, strengthen connection, and find ways to heal and support one another as a unit. The first step is to contact our intake coordinator. They can gather necessary information, and help match you with a therapist who best fits your needs and availability.
