Dr. Mark Sciutto

Counselor Summary

Hello! I’m Dr. Sciutto!

Ph.D.

Dr. Mark Sciutto (he/him) is a licensed psychologist and a Professor of Psychology at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pennsylvania. He received his Ph.D. in Clinical and School Psychology from Hofstra University. Although Mark is primarily engaged in working with students who are the mental health professionals of tomorrow, he has a wide range of clinical experience, including private practice, a yearlong sabbatical at the Center for the Management of ADHD at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and a fellowship at the Albert Ellis Institute in New York. He specializes in working with ADHD, anger, and anxiety across the lifespan.

Mark’s approach to counseling is grounded in cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) but also draws on family-systems, humanistic and mindfulness-based approaches. Most importantly, Mark believes that a counseling relationship, regardless of approach, should be grounded in trust and empathy. Counseling, like teaching, is most effective when it is a genuinely collaborative process that prioritizes the client’s values and goals. Meaningful changes come when the counseling relationship enhances understanding, motivation, reflection, and practice.

Mark believes that counseling practices should be adapted to the needs of an individual’s unique life circumstances and informed by current scientific evidence. Accordingly, his clinical work is closely aligned with his teaching and research experience. His research has focused on knowledge, misconceptions, and stigma toward ADHD. He is currently exploring the ways in which public perceptions of ADHD can be shaped for the better by telling the stories of people who have thrived, at least in part, because of their ADHD. Over the past 10 years, he has also been working with a local community organization (Shanthi Project; www.ShanthiProject.org) on research examining the benefits of mindfulness practices for children and adults.
