May B. Ambrogi, MSW, LCSW

Counselor Summary

May AmbrogiI am fully trained in and actively practice Functional Family Therapy (FFT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR) and have received 40-hours of American Society of Clinical Hypnosis (ASCH)-approved training hours in order to practice hypnotherapy. My clinical experiences involve extensive work with families, children and adults.

I began my clinical career at Valley Youth House in 2002, providing therapy to children and families in which substance abuse and mental health issues were of primary concern. This work included providing individual and couples therapy to adults who were diagnosed with varying mental health issues such as anxiety, depression and Bipolar Disorder. I then became a certified Functional Family Therapist providing intensive, research-based and highly specialized family therapy to adolescents and their parents. Often these youth were referred by juvenile probation officers and schools, and were seen as too “resistant” to help. However, with my non-judgmental and strength-based approach, I have been able to help families return to a place of harmony and success. My success as a Functional Family Therapist led to my being hired directly by Functional Family Therapy, LLC as a National Consultant and National Trainer for this model of therapy, which I have been practicing since 2003.

Much of my work at the practice centers around working with adults on parenting, anxiety, depression, women’s issues and trauma. I also work with children providing therapy to help them deal with a number of issues impacting their ability to do well in school and/or at home. My overall approach to working with anyone is to see people’s strengths, even when they cannot see them initially. I work to help people identify what they do right, just as much as where they are struggling. And first and foremost, to build a relationship of trust and respect so that therapy can be a wholly positive experience.
